Accentuate the Negative Integers and rational numbers
Algorithms for adding rational numbers:
(+) + (+) = (+) (-) + (-) = (-)
(+) + (-) = ? 1. Subtract the numbers without their signs. (-) + (+) = ? 2. The sign of the number with the greater absolute value is the sign of the sum.
Algorithms for subtracting rational numbers:
Use Keep - Flip - Change to rewrite all subtraction problems as addtion.
1. Keep the first number the same. 2. Flip the (-) sign to a (+) sign. 3. Change the second number to its opposite.
Algorithms for multiplying rational numbers:
(+) x (+) = (+) (+) x (-) = (-) (-) x (+) = (-) (-) x (-) = (+)
1. Parenthesis 2. Exponents 3. Multiplication and Division (left to right) 4. Addition and Subtraction (left to right)
Distributive Property
If an expression is written in factored form, you will write it in expanded form. If an expression is written in expanded form, you will write it in factored form.
Examples:
1. 2 (x + 4) = 2x + 2(4) 2. 3x - 5x = x(3 - 5)
